as I am a newbie to both blogs & e-zines as far a doing one myself —though lots of ideas — just waiting to push self off pinnacle (which is soon!!) the blog in me will be born with or without my help!!!— anywho — I think you are correct most blogs today though personal and self-expressive are also filled with images of the art or techie stuff they do as well as info on how to’s and where to buy and usually many links to similar thinking others. Til I read your comments I hadn’t gotten to the idea of retro e-zines but the truth will set you free and the confusion in this head was cleared!!-

@Richard: hello! Sorry about that; no, I hadn’t been completely clear on the timeline, but by people, I’d meant the other parties involved. Powell’s, for example (not stocking them) and Kirkus Discoveries (because Heaven forbid regular Kirkus) review them. It seems like the publishing industry is just several steps behind POD technology.

But you’re right: “discovers” was the wrong word.

In addition to publishing With Hitler in New York in June 200 with iUniverse, I also published my first Lulu book, Diary of a Congressional Candidate in Florida’s Fourth Congressional District, in October. 2005. Lulu had just begun to get noticed the year before. Sorry if I didn’t make the timeline clear in the article, but I didn’t mean to give the impression that I just “discovered” POD.

Hi Will. Not sure what you mean by “discovers” or “behind the times.” In the article I state that I published my first POD book in 2000, eight years ago, with iUniverse’s Backinprint.com program.

I’m glad you’ve gotten so much good feedback from your book. POD is perfect for books that are just a little too quirky for a publisher to want to take a chance on. There are a lot of negative assumptions about people who self-publish, but our reasons are as varied as our writings and sometimes our reasons are good ones, based on a solid grasp of market realities.

Good luck, and I hope to see a lot of your writing in the future, perhaps even at conventional bookstores someday. Just don’t lose your edge to make it happen.
